Warehouse Racking

Warehouse racking is an essential aspect of any efficient and organized warehouse operation. It involves the use of pallet rack and storage systems to maximize space utilization and improve workflow efficiency. National Material Handling specializes in providing pallet rack and storage systems designed to help customers make the most of their warehouse space. Our expertise in the industry, combined with our wide range of high-quality products, enables us to provide tailored solutions that meet the specific needs of each customer.

Types of Warehouse Racking

National Material Handling offers new and used options in warehouse racking.

SELECTIVE

Need to expand your warehouse storage? Selective rack is a type of warehouse racking system that allows for easy access to individual pallets, as each pallet is stored on its own set of beams without interference from other stored items.

STRUCTURAL

Structural rack is a type of warehouse racking system that is designed for heavy-duty applications, where durability and strength are paramount. It is made up of upright frames, horizontal and diagonal braces, and steel beams that form the support structure for the stored goods. The steel components of structural rack are typically thicker and more substantial than those used in other types of racking systems, making it ideal for handling heavy loads and withstanding harsh environments.

PALLET FLOW (FIFO)

Pallet flow is a great solution for storing many identical pallets. It eliminates fork truck aisles and guarantees proper stock rotation with a first in first out.

PUSH BACK (FILO)

Do you have limited space but need to store a large quantity of the SKU? Pushback rack is a type of warehouse racking system in which pallets are stored on a series of nested carts that are pushed back along inclined rails, allowing for high-density storage with multiple pallets stored on a single lane.

DRIVE-IN (FIFO) / DRIVE THRU

A rack structure comprised primarily of vertical upright frames, horizontal support arms, and horizontal load rails typically used for one-wide by multiple-depth storage. This structure includes an ‘anchor section’ with horizontal beams supporting the load rails. Loading & unloading within a bay must be done from the same aisle. A two-way drive-in rack is a special case where back-to-back rows of drive-in racks are combined into a single entity with a common rear post.

Carton Flow

A storage system that utilizes inclined shelves with rollers or wheels to facilitate the movement of cartons or cases in a first-in, first-out (FIFO) manner.

Cantilever Rack

Cantilever rack is a solution that features a series of arms or beams attached to vertical columns, providing a flexible and efficient solution for storing long and bulky items such as lumber, pipes, or furniture.

Stack Racks

Stack racks are freestanding portable frames that can be easily assembled and disassembled, providing a flexible storage solution for goods that may not fit in traditional pallet racking systems, such as awkwardly shaped or sized items.

Warehouse Racking Design

National Material Handling can design solid storage systems for heavy and oversized pallets.

Warehouse Racking Applications

Pick Towers/Modules

A pick module is a multi-level order fulfillment system used in warehouses and distribution centers, consisting of shelving, conveyors, and platforms designed to efficiently process small-to-medium sized orders.

AS/RS

Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) are advanced warehouse automation technologies that utilize computer-controlled systems to automatically store and retrieve goods from a designated storage location. AS/RS systems can help optimize warehouse space utilization, increase picking accuracy, and speed, and reduce labor costs.

Sortation Systems

Sortation systems are a type of warehouse automation technology that facilitate the sorting and routing of products to their respective destinations within a warehouse or distribution center.

Features of Warehouse Racking

  • Upright Frames: Vertical supports that anchor the racking system to the floor and provide the overall structure.
  • Beams: Horizontal supports that span between uprights and support the stored goods. Beams can be adjusted to accommodate different load sizes.
  • Bracing: Diagonal supports that connect uprights to add stability to the overall structure.
  • Decking: The surface on which goods are stored, which can be made of materials such as wire mesh, plywood, or steel.
  • Safety Features: Optional safety components such as pallet stops, wire mesh backstops, and column protectors can be added to prevent damage to the racking system and improve safety in the warehouse.
  • Customization Options: Racking systems can be customized to fit the unique needs of a warehouse, including different heights, widths, and depths, as well as accessories like flow racks, carton flow systems, and more.

Benefits of Warehouse Racking

Maximizing space utilization

Warehouse racking allows businesses to store goods vertically, freeing up valuable floor space and maximizing the use of available storage space. High density storage systems maximize space for increased capacity with first in, first out or last in, first out.

Improved inventory management

By organizing products into clearly labeled and accessible locations, warehouse racking helps businesses manage their inventory more efficiently, reducing the risk of stock shortages or overstocking.

Increased productivity

Warehouse racking can improve workflow efficiency by allowing workers to quickly locate and retrieve products, reducing the time and effort required to move goods.

Enhanced safety

Properly installed warehouse racking can improve safety in the workplace by reducing the risk of accidents, such as multiple pallets stacked on top of each other on the floor.
